Why Parents Choose Jiu-Jitsu
Jiu-Jitsu gives kids a physical activity that also requires them to think.
They learn how to move with a partner, follow instructions, solve problems, stay balanced, work through difficult positions, and keep trying when something does not work right away.
The goal is not just to teach techniques. Classes also give children a structured place to exercise, learn with other kids, and build experience through practice.
Physical Activity
Kids move, drill, play, and train instead of sitting on the sidelines.
Confidence
Children gain confidence by learning skills and seeing themselves improve over time.
Focus & Listening
Students need to watch, listen, and follow steps to learn new techniques.
Coordination
Jiu-Jitsu develops balance, movement, timing, and body awareness.
Teamwork
Kids work with training partners and learn how to be a good teammate.
Little Ninjas — Ages 3–4
Little Ninjas is our youngest Jiu-Jitsu group.
This is a parent-and-me class, so a parent or caregiver participates with the child. Classes are approximately 40 minutes long.
At this age, the goal is not to teach complicated submissions or expect children to train like older students. Instead, class focuses on:
- movement
- balance
- coordination
- listening
- following simple directions
- exercise
- basic Jiu-Jitsu positions and skills
- becoming comfortable in a martial arts class
Parents help their child participate and stay engaged.
What Should My 3- or 4-Year-Old Be Able to Do?
They do not need prior martial arts experience. They do not need to already be athletic. They simply need to be able to participate with a parent or caregiver and begin learning how to follow the class structure.
Some children jump right in. Others need time to become comfortable. That is normal.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu — Ages 5–7
The ages 5–7 group begins learning more structured Jiu-Jitsu while keeping the class appropriate for younger children.
Students work on basic positions, movement, control, escapes, and introductory takedown or grappling skills. They also practice listening, taking turns, working with partners, and staying focused during class.
The goal is to give kids a strong foundation without expecting them to train like older students.
What Kids Work On
- Basic Jiu-Jitsu Positions — Learn common positions and how to move safely.
- Escapes — Learn how to stay calm and work out of basic positions.
- Movement — Develop coordination, balance, and body control.
- Partner Skills — Learn how to drill safely and work with another student.
- Listening — Practice watching demonstrations and following coaching instructions.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu — Ages 8–12
Older kids are ready for more complete Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training.
Students learn positions, takedowns, escapes, control, sweeps, submissions, and live grappling in an age-appropriate format. They begin to understand how techniques connect rather than simply memorizing individual moves.
Classes can challenge both beginners and more experienced students.
Skills Students Develop
- Takedowns
- Position
- Escapes
- Control
- Sweeps
- Age-appropriate submissions
- Live grappling
- Problem solving

What Happens in a Kids Jiu-Jitsu Class?
Class structure depends on the age group. A typical class may include:
- warm-up games or movement
- technique demonstration
- partner drilling
- positional games
- supervised live grappling for appropriate age groups
- review
- team interaction
Coaches explain skills in smaller steps and adjust how they teach based on the age of the class. Kids are not expected to understand everything immediately. Learning comes through repetition and practice.

What If My Child Has Never Done Martial Arts?
That is completely normal. Most new students start without any Jiu-Jitsu experience.
Your child does not need to know how to wrestle.
They do not need to be especially strong or athletic.
They do not need to compete.
The coach will help them learn the basic rules, positions, and movements as they go.
What If My Child Is Shy?
Some children are comfortable joining a new group immediately. Others need more time.
A child can start by watching, learning the routine, working with a coach or partner, and becoming more comfortable over time.
What If My Child Has a Lot of Energy?
Jiu-Jitsu gives kids a structured place to move.
They need to listen to instructions, practice with a partner, follow rules, and use their energy during drills and training.
The combination of physical activity and structured learning can make martial arts a good fit for children who enjoy staying active.
Kids Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense
Jiu-Jitsu teaches children how to move, stay balanced, protect themselves in difficult positions, escape, control distance, and use grappling skills with a resisting partner.
Training should also reinforce that physical skills are not something to use casually at school or with friends. The goal is to help kids understand control and responsibility, not encourage fighting.
Is Kids Jiu-Jitsu Safe?
Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport, so no martial art can be described as risk-free. Kids classes should focus on controlled practice, proper technique, appropriate partners, clear rules, and coach supervision.
Children learn how to tap, stop when a partner taps, and practice techniques safely. Parents should let the coaching staff know about any physical limitations or concerns before class.
Does My Child Have to Compete?
No. Kids can train Jiu-Jitsu without entering tournaments.
Some children eventually enjoy competition and want to test their skills. Others prefer learning and training at the gym. Both are fine.
Competition should be presented as an optional opportunity, not a requirement.
